At what age should I enroll my child in music lessons?
Age is just a number as they say. As far as ability to participate in lessons, it does not go by age necessarily, but by maturity. A 10 year old may not be able to sit still for 5 minutes while a 6 year old can for an hour. So it varies by child. If you feel like your child can sit still for 30 minutes, concentrate on what the teacher is trying to say, and practice at home during the week, then go for it! And no matter what, there is no commitment period so feel free to try it out and see if it works for you and your child!
Group classes or private lessons?
Many parents come to the dilemma of what to do when it comes to group lessons vs private lessons. Here at String Along, we recommend that if you want your child to truly succeed in the violin, while group lessons are a great way to be involved with others, private lessons are highly recommended first and foremost! Here's why! With a group lesson, you have 1 teacher to multiple children, trying to attend to all their needs in a limited amount of time. She might not have time to extensively go over that one part of the song to make sure your child gets it before they go home because there is so much to get through, and so many other children to help. With private lessons, however, you have 1 teacher to 1 student. The perfect ratio, huh? Therefore, if the student is struggling, then the teacher is able to use as much time necessary to focus on that one student to get that song right. If you go home and practice and practice something wrong, then you're getting it drilled into your brain to play it the wrong way, so it is important to learn how to play it the right way before going home to practice all week!
What curriculum do we use?
Here at String Along, we find we get the most benefit from the Essential Elements curriculum and All for Strings! That is not to say we will not use any other books during the course of our time together, but these are the main ones.
